Behind the Clouds

At every stage of life, we are presented with a choice: to surrender to despair or to rise above it. Life inevitably brings people, circumstances, and events that can leave us feeling frustrated, exhausted, and overwhelmed. There are moments when everything seems turbulent, uncertain, and emotionally draining. Yet even in the midst of these challenges, a simple shift in perspective—a change in attitude, or what Gestalt psychology calls a change in perception—can transform the way we experience life.
Although life's difficulties may be tiring and demanding, we can still find moments to smile. We can remind ourselves that no matter how dense the clouds appear, the sun continues to shine beyond them. The clouds of exhaustion, disappointment, and despair may temporarily block our view, but they can never extinguish the light that remains.
As the poet Rumi beautifully reminds us:
For we live in the kingdom of joy.
Do not give your heart to anything else
But to the love of those who are clear joy.
Do not stray into the neighborhood of despair,
For there are hopes—they are real, they exist.
Do not go in the direction of darkness.
I tell you: suns exist.
Within each of us resides a quiet strength—a blend of faith, hope, and determination. In life's defining moments, we have the opportunity to choose that inner strength over fear and discouragement. But how can we ensure that we make this choice when we need it most?
The answer lies in daily practice. A positive outlook is not a denial of reality; it is a habit that gradually strengthens our "faith muscles." Each day we choose gratitude over complaint, hope over helplessness, and courage over fear, we prepare ourselves for the inevitable storms of life. This cultivated faith becomes our anchor when the waters are murky, the winds are fierce, and our inner world feels shaken.
Doubts, worries, anxieties, and tensions need not be conquered all at once. They can be addressed patiently, one step at a time. When life feels overwhelming, pause. Take a few deep breaths for a couple of minutes. Then focus only on the next thirty to sixty minutes rather than the uncertainties of the distant future. By narrowing our attention to the present moment, we prevent ourselves from being consumed by the weight of everything at once.
Life becomes more manageable when we face one challenge at a time. In doing so, we not only reduce our anxiety but also give each situation the attention and respect it deserves. Every difficulty becomes an opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen our resilience.
Ultimately, to choose faith over despair is to honour life itself. It is to recognize that while suffering is an inevitable part of the human journey, so too are hope, joy, and renewal. The sun has never ceased to exist; sometimes we simply need the patience and courage to wait for the clouds to pass.
